The Gentle Answer

Adam Dodds

Abstract

There is widespread belief amongst Muslims that the Bible has been corrupted. The source of this belief is the 1864 book Izhar al-Haqq which has become the template for Muslim apologetics and polemics toward Christian faith, one popularised by South African Ahmad Deedat. Gordon Nickel’s The Gentle Answer is the first comprehensive response to the Izhar and is essential reading for missional engagement with Muslims. This review article summarises the key contributions of The Gentle Answer, examines its weaknesses, and argues for its enduring importance. The article concludes by showing the substantial implications of arguments contained in The Gentle Answer.
